    sua persistência Mariana Pinto dos Santos Abstract José Augusto França was the most important art historian in Portugal in the XXth century and was responsible for establishing a historiographic canon for the portuguese XIXth and XXth century art history Working both as art critic and art historian José Augusto França promoted a narrative based on the sociology of art learned with Pierre Francastel with whom he studied in Paris which eventually promoted the surrealist and abstraccionist art he defended as a critic This narrative elected Paris as an artistic and cultural role model and constantly decreted a portuguese delay in face of that model Although some of the later art historians tried to criticize França s approach to art history he nevertheless kept being a major reference to later generations of art historians and his cronologies historic concepts and extensive inventories of facts were never fully questioned and were used as sources for later art history work This kind of art history still defends the idea of a canon in the art history discourse and feeling unable to produce a new one it insists on the old one This article aims to contribute for the critical and historic analysis of

    global challenging conventional Eurocentric historiographies This paper examines the effect of two influential works of global history The Great Divergence 2000 by Kenneth Pomeranz and On Their Own Terms 2005 by Benjamin Elman on a conventional historical narrative of Chinese failure and European triumph in the early modern period These evidently very different works of historical research are analysed to uncover some of the core ideas shared by most authors

  • Destribalização, regedorias e desenvolvimento comunitário: notas acerca do pensamento colonial português (1910-1965) | Práticas da História
    colonial português 1910 1965 Diogo Ramada Curto e Bernardo Pinto da Cruz Abstract This article contributes to the historical sociology of the Portuguese imperial institutions of social and political control Through a genealogy of the category of detribalization and the correlated image of the detribalized we question the so called reformist colonial policy of the early 60s namely the creation of regedorias and the design of communitarian development projects We try to lay the foundations for a different more nuanced analytical perspective impermeable to the historical discourses of social actors Recent scholarly works in the field of colonial and science studies have reproduced two distinct views already shared and debated within the Portuguese colonial regime on one hand the idea that regedorias served only military purposes of population control during warfare on the other the assumption which posits communitarian development programs as a more benign social scientifically anchored alternative to violence and war The study of the reception and circulation of ideas about detribalization shows that both arguments are but an oversimplification and reproduction of political sides and strategies of historical actors Finally we discuss Portuguese elites dependence on international discourses and the relative autonomy of social science vis à
